Editorial Policy

The Editorial Policy of Maldives Economy Today (MET) is to be an apolitical and unbiased source of information on matters economic. For this purpose, articles and shorter commentary pieces will be limited to the broad landscape of matters economic, including trade, financial, business, commerce and investment climate of the Maldives. ​They should be reflective of factual data, facts, figures and statistics where available. Deductions, assumptions and conclusions should follow naturally from a holistic understanding of the data. ​Articles and commentaries should be based on policies and shall not target individuals and personalities. MET will invite and publish opinions from professionals, academics and those with relevant experience on issues prevalent in the Economy. Such Opinions will be attributed only to the contributor and reflect only the opinion of the contributor and not the journal.

AHMED MOHAMED
FOUNDER

Ahmed Mohamed holds a Master’s degree in Public Policy Economics from the University of Hull, UK, with a focus on micro and macroeconomic policies for sustainable development in Small Island Developing States. ​He began his public service career in 1990 at the Ministry of Planning and National Development, where he rose to the position of Executive Director, leading the National Planning Division. His key responsibilities included the formulation and oversight of the National Development Plans. Under his leadership, the sixth and seventh National Development Plans were developed, both of which were rights-based and results-oriented. ​From 2005 to 2008, Ahmed Mohamed served as Chairman and later CEO of the State Trading Organisation (STO), where he was responsible for ensuring the supply of essential goods such as fuel and food for the Maldives. He also held board positions in several prominent public and state-owned companies. ​In 2012, he was appointed Minister of Economic Development, where he led the development of the Maldives Economic Diversification Strategy. Afterward, he served as Commissioner General of Customs before transitioning to a diplomatic career in 2015, becoming the Ambassador of the Maldives to India. ​Currently, Ahmed Mohamed works for the Maldives National University, where he heads the university's commercial arm, Univiya Holdings Pvt Ltd.

IBRAHIM ATHIF SHAKOOR

EDITOR

Ibrahim Athif Shakoor, has a BA in Economics, and an MBA from Monash University, Australia. He has served at senior, CEO level and Board Positions of some of Maldives biggest and most diversified corporate entities, both public and private. ​Athif’s study and publication on the local economy is more than 20 years old and previously he has edited and managed the Economic Desk and the Maldives Economic Review and have been published abroad including at https://www.ft.lk. ​Since 2009 Athif, is mainly a consultant to both local and foreign companies, often lecture on the economy and is in a modest measure, a writer and an essayist and his writings are being collected together at www.athifshakoor.com.​
